Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago in collaboration with the national agricultural researcher, KEPHIS, have teamed up to pioneer potato growing in Cheplaskei, Moiben Sub-County.
The Governor's farm will go into history books as the model and first plantation to upset the norm, at least bringing in a new practice for an area only known for maize growing.
Mandago has obtained certified Dutch Robbin potato, size one seed.
The Governor has put 20 acres under potatoes and other big portions under vegetable and tomatoes.
Speaking after personally casting seed, Mandago said his intention is to lead from the front, become an ambassador.
"Moiben/Cheplaskei is an area traditionally known for maize growing, therefore nothing else is grown on a large scale," said Mandago.
"But with the support of Kephis who certifies seeds for Kenyans, I have decided to plant potatoes as a way to sensitize our farmers about diversification," he noted.
He added: "As a leader, it is crucial that whatever we urge our farmers to do, we become the first one, to prove that it is actually practical.
Mandago is optimistic that the growth of potatoes in Moiben and general diversification will give muscle to food security, which is among Jubilee Government's 'Big Four Pillars'.
Vegetables and tomatoes are other varieties of crops that are under irrigation.
