Mandera governor Ali Roba flagged off relief food aid for 70,000 households across the six sub-counties.
Each household will get 10 kilograms of rice, 5 kilograms of beans and 2 litres of vegetable oil in the program fully funded by the county government.
''This is strictly meant for the population severely affected by the drought,'' he said.
Roba said the number was over and above 4,000 households that were already getting a similar monthly food rations at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps.
"Insha’Allah we plan to provide the ratio on a monthly basis as part of a program that has been ongoing. We believe we are the first line of response to these challenges and we shall therefore continuously support the great people of this county,'' the governor said after flagging off the foodstuff.
The County is among 23 arid and semi arid counties in the country that have been hit by famine, following the ongoing drought.
