Lafey Deputy County Commissioner Eric Oronyi told Daily Nation, that unknown number of heavily armed suspected Al-Shabaab militants attacked the station after vandalising a Safaricom Ltd mast at Khoror Farar at around 3am, Thursday.

He said there was communication hitches in the region, giving the attackers ample time to conduct their attacks.

Oronyi however indicated that reinforcement from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in Mandera had been dispatched to the area, to ensure security.

The attack came barely two weeks after suspected Al-Shabaab militia attacked Jabane Hotel and Equity Bank building in Mandera town, the night of January 23.

Area governor Ali Roba said: ''One brave National Police Reservist lost his life to gun shot while engaging the attackers in town. The NPR was one of the guards providing external security to the Deputy governor's house across the road.''

It was suspected that they were targeting eight non locals residing at the hotel.
