A nominated Member of Uasin Gishu County Assembly has raised concerns over what she says is a high number of people who are yet to come out and publicly accept to be living with HIV.

The MCA, Mary Goretti further wants sensitization exercise conducted across the county in a bid to help address cultural issues that make it hard for people to come out and admit to being HIV positive.

Speaking in Eldoret on Tuesday, Goretti said there were many people who are yet to believe that HIV is real.

"There are many people who are still in denial and a lot of work need to be done especially to those who still think HIV is not there," said the MCA who has lived with HIV for the past 19 years.

"We need to do a lot of sensitization and reach out to the communities so that we make them understand how to take care of people living with HIV as this will go along way towards addressing fears that make it hard for people to go public," she added.

According to the 2015 statistics shared during the marking of this year's World Aids Day in Eldoret, HIV prevalence in Uasin Gishu county was 4.7 percent from 11 percent a decade ago.

New infections also dropped to 3,744 from 6,000 with 85 percent decrease in new mother-to-child infections.
