Chief Justice David Maraga has requested Members of Parliament's to lend the Judiciary a hand as it works towards enhancing its services to the public.

Speaking during an induction workshop of the National Assembly Justice and Legal Affairs Committee in Mombasa Friday, Maraga requested the lawmakers to approve his appeal to have the number of judges and magistrates increased to improve efficiency in the court rooms.

He said that with the current set up, the ratio of judges and magistrates to Kenyans is low resulting to the high number of pending cases in courts.

''The ratio of judges and magistrates to Kenyans is not impressive currently and requires immediate intervention. Because of that, we will soon be getting back to you to approve our proposal to have the situation improved,'' he told the MPs.

Maraga also pledged the Judiciary's commitment to clear the piling cases in courts within the shortest time possible.

He said that himself and juniors have set a goal to tackle cases that have been lying on their shelves for the last 5 years in the next one year.

''We are working towards clearing cases that have been going or pending in our courts for the last five years by the end of this year,'' he added.
