Chief Justice David Maraga has hailed the progress that the Judiciary has made during his first year in office.

Maraga was speaking during the launch of the annual judiciary progress report today, on Friday.

“During the period under review, there were many activities under the National Council on the administration of justice, the main ones being the assessment for the hearing of the election petitions,” said the judge.

Maraga sought to underline the importance of separation of power, saying the three arms of government should work together but independently.

“Although the three arms of government are independent, they are nonetheless interdependent. When any one of them is discharging an important constitutional mandate they do so in the knowledge that there are constitutional devices created to serve the same people,”

The judiciary was under the spotlight from the recently concluded national election, with politicians and Kenyans alike divided on the rulings they made.

The court made a landmark ruling to nullify the August 8 presidential election, which they said was marred by irregularities and illegalities.

The decision to decide the fate of the presidency was once again thrown back to the court after the October 26 polls, this time upholding the results that gave President Kenyatta another five-year term.
