Chief Justice David Maraga has been encouraged to continue shielding Kenya’s Judiciary from attacks by politicians.
International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) Executive Director Samwel Mohochi in an open letter to CJ Maraga has condemned parliament and the executive for attempting to undermine Judiciary’s independence.
Mohochi told Maraga on Sunday not to relent in defending the independence of Judiciary and safeguard its constitutional gains.
"We remind the executive and the legislature that it is their duty to respect and observe the independence of Judiciary. Any inappropriate or unwarranted interference with the judicial process shall be strongly defended on behalf of the people of Kenya," he said.
The ICJ boss criticised leaders who have been attacking the judiciary, specifically Supreme Court judges, for annulling President Uhuru Kenyatta’s victory in August polls.
"The law says that in exercise of judicial authority, the Judiciary shall not be subject to the control or direction of any person or authority," said Mohochi.
Mohochi hailed CJ Maraga and promised to support judicial officers as they undertake their mandate.
"We pledge and will continue to offer our support as a body of jurists," he said.
