Chief Justice David Maraga has said the judiciary needs to be independent to advocate for democracy and protect.human rights.
Addressing judges and magistrates in Nakuru when he officially opened the Kenya Judges and Magistrates Association conference, the CJ said financial freedom is among the obstacles to institution is facing.
Maraga said financial autonomy will increase its freedom."We want to ensure that the judicial fund is fully operational so that we do not have to return whatever remains at the end of a financial year to Treasury," he said.This, the soft-spoken CJ said, would ensure the judiciary completes its projects which do not fall within a financial year.
He added that this would ensure they finish projects that are not complete by the end of a financial year.The Supreme Court President assured judges and magistrates that their security will be beefed up as cases of violent suspects have been reported.
"We had cases in Nakuru and Kapsabet where magistrates were attacked by suspects and we are consulting with a view of enhancing security and getting additional police officers at the courts,"he said.
