Maraga made the remarks on Friday after the swearing-in the new IEBC team chaired by Wafula Chebukati.

He said the August elections were of great importance and competitive, and called on the commissioners and aspirants to ensure the rights of Kenyans to vote is respected.

"If citizens, political parties, and candidates do not perceive the elections as free and fair, the elections can lead to an instability in the country," he said.

"Elections the world over, particularly presidential elections, are extremely competitive and candidates will often do anything to get elected. In this regard, I urge the commission and the protagonists in the forthcoming general election to ensure that you have a duty to promote and safe guard the will of the people of Kenya," he added.

Maraga also noted that a marred electoral process would scare investors adding that elections within the constitutional provisions would give the country a good image and legitimacy.

"An election done within the constitutional guidelines confidence inspires confidence towards the legitimacy of the elected government, the resulting peace and tranquility as a result of a free and fair election attract both foreign and domestic investments. No investor will want to invest in a country whose legitimacy is questioned," he said.
