Residents of Nyagesenda village in Kisii County on Sunday woke up to discover that the body of one of their own, who had been buried on Friday, was missing in the grave.
Trouble started when a family member realised the unusual appearance of the grave of the deceased, Ms Carolyne Kerubo. It seemed tampered with. They then decided to re-dig the grave to confirm whether their loved one was still where they had laid her.
But to their shock and disbelief, the grave was empty and the incident left many of them guessing about what had happened.
“It is a very unusual thing but not that much. We had buried him on Friday only to find the ground a bit shaken today. We decided to dig it only to be shocked since nothing has been found underneath,” said Mzee Obadiah Mong’are.
“We cannot give further details on what happened because we also don’t know. However, we have been hearing cases on people being exhumed by witches but this seems to be the first incident in my life to witness,” he added.
Area Assistant Chief Elvin Mokaya confirmed the incident and termed it “shocking and unbelievable” but asked residents to remain calm till investigations are done by authorities.
“It is really shocking that a buried body can disappear to nowhere. Please remain calm till we conclude investigations and apprehend those who may have been behind it. But please time has come for people to be civilised,” he said.
