Led by Marani Ward MCA Dennis Ombachi at Nyakongo market on Monday, these residents said that poor condition of the road was derailing execution of economic activities in the area, which have otherwise stalled.

They said the road is a major link from Kisii town and neighbouring Homa-Bay County, where most residents trade their commodities.

“This road has been impassable for a long time especially when it rains and nobody seems interested in improving it. We are worried that our economy may be sabotaged,” said Ombachi.

The MCA said that since the national government has jurisdiction to improve the road, they are humbly asking them to facilitate construction of the road for the benefit of the locals,” added MCA Ombachi.

He said most activities at Nyakongo market, which was recently renovated by the county government, had literally stalled due to deteriorating condition of the road.

“You all agree with me that our market serves as the heart of Kisii and Homa-Bay Counties since it is shared by two communities. We will not sit back and watch this poor road ruin our area’s development. Therefore, Ministry of Roads must act in speed to save the situation,” added Ombachi.

Agnes Moraa who is a maize vendor in the region complained of escalating transportation costs due to poor road network.

“Matatu operators have taken advantage of the situation to hike transport cost. They have increased transportation costs from the initial Sh100 from Kisii town to Sh200,” lamented Moraa.
