Nyakongo Youth group chairperson Henry Mokaya on Wednesday said onion farming, which they ventured into in 2012, has enabled them to partly realise their objectives of joining the taxi industry business.

He said that the group has collected Sh1 miliion from the business and half that amount from their own savings that will be used to purchase a pickup for transit.

He said final plans are in place to purchase the pickup from Toyota Kenya and will be used to transport goods to different parts of the country at a fee.

“I must admit that it wasn’t easy since we started as 10 people and now the number as doubled. Onion business is actually the best due to its available market especially in neighboring Tanzania,” Mokaya said.

“We are in the process of purchasing a pickup that will be purely used for commercial purposes. By the end of this month I think all will be okay since we had paid Toyota Kenya for the same,” he added.

He asked youths to go an extra mile of being innovative besides shunning politicians who use and dump them during election periods.

“Farming pays and time has come for the youths to realise that. As youths, we must be innovative and desist from being used by hungry politicians,” he said.
