Jubilee's former Nairobi gubernatorial aspirant Bishop Margaret Wanjiru has been released.
Wanjiru was released on bond Friday afternoon by High Court judge Ngenye Macharia.
This was after Macharia agreed to reduce her bond terms to Sh100 000 down from Sh500 000.
“The cash bail granted is hereby reduced, an order directing the detention of Bishop Wanjiru is hereby set aside and she is to be set free from custody upon payment of a cash bail of Sh 100, 000,” Lady Justice Macharia ruled.
She was charged with causing public disorder and damaging election materials used in the Jubilee Party primaries.
Through her lawyer Kennedy Ochieng, the bishop had moved to the High Court to challenge an earlier decision to deny her bond and have her in detention for five days.
In a letter addressed to the presiding judge of the High Court's Criminal division, the lawyer protested against the fact that the prosecution never sought more time to have her in detention so as to record witness statements and that it was only Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi who ordered for the same without reason.
Andayi had ruled that she remain in custody for five more days, pays a Sh500 000 cash bond and produces two sureties of the same amount on Tuesday May 2 before she gets her freedom.
