Kiambu County Chief Officer in charge of Public Service and Administration Dominic Gicheru has said that the ongoing demolition of illegal stalls will continue.
The demolitions which started at the Madaraka Market in Makongeni will now be extended to other markets in the county.
Gicheru says that the owners of the stalls have been collecting rent from the tenants against the law.
"Some traders end up paying twice both to the stall owners and the county government. We have information that many go for between Sh 2,000 and Sh10,000," said Gicheru.
Speaking on Sunday when inspecting the market, the county official further noted that some stalls have been erected around the market acting as hideouts for thieves who harass traders and customers entering the market and thus denying revenue to the county government.
"The market is designed to be an open-air-market where you bring your merchandise, pay the levy for that day and do your business," he said.
Gicheru added that they will also demolish unlicensed roadside stalls that have not complied with the law and those constructed where fire engines may use to access interior establishments in the event of a fire.
