Kapkures leaders in Nakuru West have raised an alarm over the increased cases of married women undergoing Female Genital Mutilation in the area.
In an interview on Thursday the leaders claimed that there has been an upsurge of married women who opted for the services despite the anti FGM campaigns in the area.
Kigonor area anti FGM chairman, Joseph Kemei, said that most women under go FGM following pressure from their husbands.
“Only a few weeks ago, a mother of six children underwent the practice at Kapkuress centre citing that her husband had threatened to leave her claiming that she is still a girl," said Kemei.
He said that women travel from different parts of the county to the area for the cut.
“Majority of the women come in this area to be circumcised. This area has people who carry out female circumcision,” notes Kemei.
Nancy Kibii, a peer educator in the area, urges the government to start a free campaign sensitizing women on the dangers of circumcision.
“We have often concentrated on the girl child and forgot women who brainwash the children to undergo the practice. In fact they choose to be circumcised to prove to the children that there is nothing wrong with it,” said Kabii.
