Coast Regional Coordinator Nelson Marwa has been accused of overseeing illegal evictions of squatters from parcels of land at Dunga Unuse and Mbuyuni areas in Changamwe constituency.
According to a report by the Parliamentary Land Committee, the demolitions were done in 2010 and 2015 rendering majority of the residents landless. The Moses Ole Sakuda-led committee which toured the area over the weekend, said that Marwa who at the time of the demolitions was Mombasa County Commissioner, issued eviction orders with former Changamwe police boss Joseph Muthee overseeing the demolitions.National Land Commission Chairman Mohammed Swazuri has also been accused of failing to use his constitutional powers to block the demolitions.Changamwe MP Omar Mwinyi told the committee that a company identified as Westlands Properties Limited which claimed ownership of the land, is not registered by the registrar of companies."The row started when KPA was being expanded. The land has economic value and this explains why people are keen to have it. But you will not be evicted from here," said Mwinyi, as quoted by The Star.
