Following insecurity in the coast, regional coordinator Nelson Marwa has issued a stern warning to public and private vehicles using the Lamu-Mombasa route without a police escort.
This is a result of many Al Shabaab attacks in the area, forcing Marwa to tighten security.
Marwa has warned those operating vehicles which refuse to abide by the rules that their vehicles will be impounded and their licenses will be taken away.
On Thursday, Marwa emphasized the need for vehicles traveling to and from Lamu to be accompanied by a security escort.
He also added that private and public vehicles will need to be inspected by police and must have armed law enforcement officers with them as well.
“We must have a structured way in which vehicles operate along Lamu-Mombasa road. No vehicle should leave Lamu without a police escort," he said as reported by The Star.
Marwa has ordered local law enforcement to catch vehicles not abiding by the rules and punish them accordingly.
"We have police checks on the road...vehicles must undergo all these security checks. Thousands of vehicles operate on the road and we can’t have police officers in every vehicle. That’s why we came up with the issue of convoys being escorted by our security officers. Everyone must adhere to this."
