Coast Regional Coordinator Nelson Marwa has told a section of the Mombasa County Assembly to stop interfering in matters that do not concern them.
Mr Marwa told the MCAs opposing the planned eviction of families living near the Moi International Airport in Mombasa County to concentrate on their duties.
This comes after several MCAs rejected a proposal by the security committee to evict people living near the airport.
Marwa had said that there was need to relocate those living near the airport for security reasons, as the structures adjacent to the airport can be exploited by terrorists as potential hideouts.
The regional coordinator however said that the plans were discussed by the security committee with the aim of improving the security of the residents.
Marwa added that the affected families who will be moved from the land will be compensated as per country regulations.
“The proposal to demolish the houses and other structures was proposed by a security team for security reasons. They must leave because their continued stay there is a security risk,” he said
He added: “We met as a security team and proposed the matter to the National Land Commission. The airport is a critical facility which must be protected.”
Marwa’s sentiments were echoed by Kongowea Ward Representative Jabess Oduor who urged his fellow MCAs to stop interfering in the matter.
“Let Mr Marwa go ahead with the planned eviction. Were it not for him this county would have people selling drugs and killing others without any action being taken,” said Oduor.
The MCAs who opposed the eviction said the affected families have lived there for decades and any eviction should follow laid down procedures.
According to the MCAs, the proposed demolition of houses near the airport will render more than 15,000 people homeless.
