Coast Regional Commissioner Nelson Marwa has warned Mombasa residents of planned revival of the dreaded Mombasa Republican Council (MRC).

The MRC was formed in 1999 to address perceived political and economic discrimination against Coast region. The group after its formation remained active until 2008 when it started agitating for self-rule under the slogan ‘Pwani Si Kenya’ (Coast is not part of Kenya).“We are aware of plans to revive MRC,” Marwa said at a Saturday press conference in Mombasa flanked by security officers from the region.“This time we won’t treat anyone softly. You try to destabilise Mombasa and Coast we will come for you.”He said adequate arrangements have been rolled out to ensure peace prevails in Coast on August 8 and after the elections. In January government said it will investigate politicians said to be aiding MRC.Then Likoni deputy county commissioner Albert Kimathi said government will probe and bring to book people who help the outlawed group.“We cannot release their names as yet although we have all the reports concerning their activities in connection with the MRC,” Kimathi said.
