Coast regional coordinator Nelson Marwa has warned Lamu County residents against breaching the curfew rules imposed in the region as the government moves to tame insecurity.

Marwa said those who will be found culpable will be arrested and charged in court. He urged residents to support the move, noting that it is beneficial to them, The Star has reported.“The curfew is on. Everyone must respect it. We won’t tolerate movements during curfew time. If you think you can’t respect it, try us,” said the coordinator. The curfew was imposed on July 9 by acting Interior CS Fred Matiang’i following Al-Shabaab terror attacks in the region.Marwa's remarks come even as fishermen in the region decried the curfew, stating that it was affecting their livelihoods.“Things have been so bad for us. Just when we thought it was finally over, we are back to the previous problem. Once again we face an uncertain future. Who knows when the curfew will end? Maybe after two or five years — or even never,” Mohamed Athman from Kiunga said Monday. He is urging the government to allow them to continue with the night fishing.“We’ll adhere to anything they tell us, but they should allow us to fish. It’s our livelihood,” he added.“Most fish are only found at night. It is difficult to make a good catch during daytime because the fish can easily see and swim away. At night, they are partially blinded and can easily be caught in large numbers. We hope they will consider our plight,” added fisherman Yusuf Omar.
