the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) Masaba branch will hold a three-day conference to discuss among other things the conduct members in their respective institutions.
Branch secretary general Meshack Ombongi on Wednesday said officials had agreed on the three-day seminar at Mwalimu Hotel in Kisii to discuss disciplinary related issues that have rocked a number of its members in the past six months.
He said the branch will take the opportunity to also issue financial statements to all members to close the year.
“We have been dealing with a number of discipline-related cases among our members and we thought it wise to convene a meeting to let them know the cases we can defend and the ones we cannot defend.
These cases pitting some of our teachers and the government need to be addressed properly hence the decision to educate our members on their responsibilities,” he said.
Ombongi said the union was keen to let teachers who have been accused of defilement and other sexual harassment cases face the law and warned the union will not hesitate to revoke their membership.
“There are some cases we can intervene like unfair dismissal or illegitimate transfers but we may have every little input in matters sexual harassment and defilement by our members of school children. We will make our stand known to all members and we will not hesitate to expel those with serious cases,” he said.
He lauded area teachers for working closely with the union and insisted that the union was committed to serve all members without discrimination.
“They have been working with us throughout the year in good faith and we thank them. We will also use the seminar to make our financial records open. Otherwise as a union, we will always protect the interest of our members,” he said.
