A Maseno landlord is set to be sued for increasing rent without any prior notice to his tenants and for allegedly going against the initial agreement.
The tenants, comprising students from Maseno University, said that the Olal Hostel landlord had asked them to add an additional rent of Sh3,500 to the initial rent of Sh10,000.
The students, through their leader Tyson Ochieng, said that it was against what they agreed at the beginning of the semester and nobody gave them a notice of rent increment.
“This is outrageous because nobody can just come from nowhere and increase rent just because he feels like doing so. This must end,” said Ochieng on Thursday.
Ochieng said that no explanation had been given as to why they are needed to pay the extra money. He added that efforts to solve the matter had hit a dead end after the landlord, identified as Thomas Omwola, refused to negotiate.
“We have tried our best in talking about the situation but he is adamant. It is unfair to us and therefore the courts will decide our fate because we have every reason to protest the move,” added Ochieng.
