Maseno residents have appealed to area political leaders to help mediate in the issues affecting Maseno University students.
Speaking to this writer on Wednesday after Tuesday's riots that led to the closure of the university, Mary Gathua, a shopkeeper noted that the students have been frustrated after the institution's Vice-Chancellor Prof Dominic Makawiti proceeded on terminal leave in May this year.
Gathua said that the university lacked a supreme authority to guide and make decisions for the students. She claims the students were victims of circumstances in the wrangles in the office of the Vice Chancellor.
Peter Okal, a bodaboda operator, said that area leaders have kept mum over the issues affecting the students.
"These are our children and we need to help solve their issues. We cannot continue keeping silent when the lives of our students are at risk," he said.
Okal challenged the county government of Kisumu to come to the rescue of the students by addressing issues affecting the varsity.
He also asked Kisumu West MP Olago Aluoch to help guide the students to prevent future riots.
