Traders and residents of Maseno market want the Kisumu County government to come up with a proper waste disposal projects in the township.
The market lacks a proper waste disposal sites and the waste disposed is also not collected in time hence posing as a health hazard to the residents and traders.
A spot check by this writer on Thursday evening disclosed that a small field in the middle of the market has been turned into a dumpsite.
Lucy Okwemba, a trader in the market told this writer that the traders in the market are prompted to dispose their waste in the middle of the market.
“We do not have dustbins or proper dump sites yet we pay taxes daily”, said Ms Okwemba.
The traders have threatened to withdraw from paying taxes until swift measures are taken to contain the situation.
Owing the high population of people at Maseno market, the waste accumulates rapidly.
This has caused a foul smell to mask the atmosphere of the market.
Mike Omollo, a trader who owns a hotel near the new dump site said that he has to use his own finances to clear the smelly chunk of waste outside his business premise.
“Every morning I burn plastic and paper waste at the dump site”, said Omollo.
The dump site has attracted flies and pigs, something that may see hotel owners like Mike lose customers as the flies pose a risk of diseases like cholera and dysentery spreading.
The traders are calling for the relevant authorities to come in and ensure they are provided with dustbins to dump their waste before deadly diseases start masquerading and spreading in the market.
