Maseno University students have taken to the streets, demanding a quick solution to the ongoing lecturers’ strike that has paralysed learning in public universities.
According to the Daily Nation, the students waved placards, calling for a speedy agreement by both parties.
“We have been idling [in the] campus since the semester started. We want to be taught,” said one of the students.
Student leader Fred Makajos, who spoke at the university’s graduation square, said they are feeling the effects of the strike, which has affected their academic schedule.
The strike, according to most of the students could end up disrupting their learning calendar, especially those who were scheduled to graduate and start their industrial attachements in April.
“The strike is delaying several activities in the universities. The fourth years who will be going for attachment will be affected,” said Makajos.
The strike, which is on its third week now has affected a large number of students, with most of them idling in campus, while others have decided to stay away until the matter is resolved.
“They chose to stay away when the lecturers gave a strike notice in December,” said Makajos.
The lecturers are demanding for the implementation of a Collective Bargaining Agreement that they signed with the government four years ago, and have said they will stop at nothing until its implemented.
