The dam was constructed by the East African British Protectorate who contracted a French Company to establish dams and water plans in the Kenya's Arid and Semi-Arid Land areas in 1946 and was completed in October the same year.

Over the years, the inhabitants of Emwea, Mithini, Kingatuani and Kyumu villages have always woken up to a big mass of water and the dam has made them dependent on it that they would not survive without the same.

Be it as it may, continued siltation in the dam has gradually filled it and it is the fear of all that it will go dry soon and this is not only ominous but a disaster.

Residents in the area have been urged to come together and help avert this disaster and most of them plead with the leaders in Ukambani to step in and save the sinking boat.
