Students at Masinde Muliro University in Kakamega County clashed with security officials Wednesday evening, protesting over increased fees at the institution.
The riots turned ugly as the irate students stoned the building used by University security officials.
Anti-riot police officers were called upon to intervene.
The students have been boycotting lectures since Monday after the University Senate declined to review fee structures.
Students’ organisation chairperson Winnie Opiyo and Secretary Daudi Kemboi said the Senate had ruled out any possibility of the fees and other charges being reviewed.
“Tension started building at the university after students learnt that the senate was not ready to open discussion on the issue of fees and other charges leading to confrontations with security officials,” said Ms Opiyo, as quoted by Nation.
Kakamega County police commander Tito Kilonzi said tension escalated after a group of students started damaging property at the University.
