After weeks and months of regional activism, Ijara residents can now breath a sigh of relief after their plans to have Boni forest de-gazetted inched closer to fruition.
The aggressive bid to have the tourist destination was spearheaded by the Garissa Women Rep Shukran Gure, who had firmly stated that she would tirelessly work to realize the bid.
Announcing the success, Gure affirmed that the degazettement of the forest would massively boost local tourism while creating jobs for hundreds of youths from the county.
"We celebrate the victory of having the Boni forest de-gazetted as people of Garissa. When Hon Abass brought the petition before our committee, I promised to support it for the benefit of Ijara people as long as I seat in the Environment committee as an executive member," she said.
However, Gure attributed the success of the initiative to Amina Abdalla, who is the chair of Environment committee for what she termed as her tireless effort to ensure that the petition was successfully passed.
