Mataara Tea Factory Hydroelectric Power plant project is on course and will be completed in a few months time, a director at the factory has said.
Stephen Mukora who is the factory's Board of Directors Chairman said the power project that started at the beginning of the year has continued as planned despite some challenges at the beginning.
Speaking to the press on Tuesday at the factory premises, Mukora said that the power project which is along River Chania will go a long way in cutting down the factory's operation costs.
"We had a number of challenges when we were starting especially with the workforce but everything was ironed out and we are now on course," Mukora said in reference to a workers' strike that had stalled the project in May.
He added that the cost of power has been the biggest challenge to the factory which runs to more than 45 per cent of the total operational costs.
"We are hoping to reduce the cost of power to around 15 per cent when this project is complete which means good returns for the farmers," he said.
Mukora said farmers living nearby the power plant will also be connected to electricity at a minimal cost.
