A matatu tout was on Monday arraigned before a Thika court charged with stealing from a commuter.
The accused, Isaac Chege was charged that on October 27 last year, he stole a carton of new ladies shoes valued at Sh20,000 from Susan Wanjohi.
Appearing before the chief magistrate Stephen Mbugi, the accused is said to have been the conductor of a Thika road bound matatu when the carton of shoes disappeared.
Prosecutor Inspector Ali told the court that the complainant had travelled to Kangari market in Murang’a County to sell her wares in the company of her friends, and in the evening, they boarded a Thika bound Matatu with all their wares.
On reaching Thika stage, the complainant alighted but on requesting for her luggage it was missing.
She enquired from the conductor of the whereabouts of her goods but instead of an explanation, the driver and the conductor started insulting her and drove off without giving her a concrete answer.
She reported the matter to the Thika police station and the conductor was arrested.
He denied the charge and was released on a cash bail of Sh100,000.
The accused person told the court that he had agreed to settle the matter out of court with the complainant but his request was denied.
The court ordered the case to resume on April 25 2015.
