Uasin Gishu county CEC in charge of Roads and Transport Gideon Birir has put on notice Sacco drivers that allow their conductors to drive matatus despite them not having driving licences.
Speaking from his office on Wednesday, Birir said that 90% of the accidents in Eldoret town are caused by unqualified matatu drivers.
"I have received reports that there are some drivers from some Saccos who give their matatus to their conductors who are not qualified drivers. It is very dangerous since they are putting the lives of their passengers in danger," he said.
He said that any Sacco that will allow such kind of behavior will lead to the cancellation of the whole Sacco.
"The most affected stages are commonly town service such as Langas, Mailinne, Chepkoilel, Kamukunji and junction stages," he said.
He added that county askaris and traffic police are carrying out crackdown and anyone who will be found will face the wrath of the law.
