Commuters in Kisii have raised concern over being exploited by matatu operators.
They claim the operators are overcharging them, especially during the heavy rains.
“The operators are charging high prices, unlike the past. It gets worse especially in the evening when the rains start to fall," said Francis Omondi.
"They know you have no otherwise that why they increase the fare prices by 50% which is very unfortunate,” he added.
“Fare prices are never stable that’s why you must always have extra cash in case they hike prices. You find that in the morning it can be Sh50, in the evening it changes to Sh100,” said Hildah Satya a student in Kisii.
“The county government should come in and ensure commuters are not exploited. They should establish fixed fare prices. It will not expose the passengers to exploitation by commuters. The operators always want to make quick money at the expense of the passengers,” said James Simiyu.
The matatu operators, however, declined the claims saying their fare prices were fixed.
“We do not charge more than the normal fee. Although at times we are forced to increase due to fluctuating fuel prices,” said Says Richard Tumbo.
