Friday evening along the Yaya - Kibera road motorists had a difficult time as police officers harassed them claiming that they have not met the required skills to operate as matatu drivers and conductors.

One of the drivers, Michael Otengo said that he had renewed his driving licence 2 months ago only to be stopped by the police and when they checked his driving licence, they claimed that the licence was invalid.

"I did not employ these officers instead they should ask the national government to increase their salary instead of harassing and interfering with our business. I renewed my licence 2 months ago, how come they claim my licence is invalid yet it even has the official stamp? The police should do their job and not interfere with other people's business," said Otengo.

He stated that the police even said that the vehicle is not registered to an insurance company yet it was registered long time ago and it has been in operation for over 4 years now plying the same Yaya - Kibera route.

"The tendency of police officers stopping us on the roads should stop or else we shall protest,’’ said another driver.

‘‘They asked passengers to alight from the vehicle claiming they vehicle is operating on the road illegally that it has not met the road requirement. I was asked to pay the police sh5, 000 or be taken to court since they said that the vehicle am driving has not been washed and its lights are dim," said David Mogesa, another driver.

Passengers complained about the harassment of the police to the matatu operators saying that the police are busy taking bribes from the poor operators who are out to hustle.

"I would advise the police to protest for a salary hike from the government instead of giving operators hard times on the road demanding bribes. Corruption will never end in Kenya," said Clinton Nzumi, a passenger.
