Transport at the Eldoret-Iten highway was on Tuesday paralysed for hours after the demonstrating Moiben matatu operators blocked the road.
Speaking to the press, the Moiben matatu Sacco chairperson Benjamin Rutto said that the poor roads in the region are making their business to operate on loss.
“We always take our cars to garage after every two days when passing through these roads. This is causing us to operate on losses, “said Rutto
Moses Kibet said that the area MP used road construction as part of his campaigning strategy but it has been three years down the line and no road has been constructed.
“The county government is very active when it comes to the issue of collecting revenue in this region, but they are not constructing any of our roads. Where do our money go?” said Kibet.
Thomas Limo said that the residents are tired of false promises made by politicians in the area and vowed to continue blocking the road until further notice.
Silas Tiren, the area MP later addressed the matatu operators promising them that he will address the matter.
“The roads in this region have already been awarded to contractors for development, and very soon you will see changes in our roads,” said Tiren.
He said that the Sergoit-Moiben road has been awarded Sh 6.8 million contract and the Moiben Chebororwa road has been awarded Sh15 million contract and the construction is expected to begin in two months time.
