Gatundu South-Nairobi route drivers on Thursday downed their tools paralyzing transport activities after barricading all access roads in the area over what they argued as biased competition from small PSV vehicles popularly known as ‘probox’.
The irate drivers and conductors were rioting the rise in the number of probox vehicles serving in the area, regretting that the business was illegally initiated as most of the probox operators had no driving licenses.
They further claimed that the operators had not gone under NTSA inspection and had not acquired yellow lines.
"We have no business operating here in the presence of illegal probox drivers who are conducting their businesses without the legal documents. It’s risky as some of them may cause accidents and go unpunished," angrily argued Titus Mwangi, one of the touts.
"These people are out to destroy our business. They carry excess passengers, have taken off our daily bread for lawlessness and we won’t allow it to happen. We will continue to have these demonstrations until NTSA comes in to tame them," added one of the drivers who sought anonymity.
The fuming demonstrators want the National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) to arbitrate and sojourn the said drivers, failure to which they will endure with the demonstrations.
