Matatu operators in Kibera on Wednesday evening experienced hard times in due to police harassment.
The traffic police officers were situated at the Yaya - Kibera - Kawangware road arresting operators who did not meet the required road rules to operate on the roads.
Many drivers had to park their vehicles by the roadside since they feared arrest by traffic police officers.
Michael Otengo, a driver on the Yaya - Kibera route said that at times, police officers harass them thus making their business bad since they cannot operate effectively.
"It is a hard time for the matatu business, the traffic officers, as usual, will not miss a mistake to claim and arrest you. We have not been ferrying passengers from 4:00 pm since the officers have camped on the road. This has caused us a big loss as passengers are stranded others walking by foot from work to their home," said Otengo.
Johannes Ouma, a matatu conductor said that he was asked to produce his valid driving licence only to find that he had forgotten it in his house. The police officers asked him to pay sh5, 000 or be taken to court.
"I wake up as early as 3 am to work. Today, I left my licence in the house. When I was asked to produce it, I tried to explain to them but the officers seemed not to understand me they claimed that I should pay sh5, 000 or else I would be taken to court, "said Ouma.
Alfred Mwangi, another driver claimed that the officers often point out minor mistakes that the vehicles have which in return make them give out heavy bribes to avoid arrest.
