Nakuru PSV operators have expressed concern over the government’s order to replace analogue speed governors with digital ones .
Speaking today at MoloLine Stage , Nakuru Town ,a number of matatu PSV operators said the move would cripple their ailing industry.
John Kariuki , a owner of two matatus said that the matatu industry hangs in the balance following the order.
“ Revoking the current model of speed governors will lead to transport crisis because the gadgets are expensive to buy “, said Karuiki, adding ,” pumping sh 50,000 to digital models will force many operators off the road'.
For Edward Koech , a PSV operator based in Nakuru , the government erred in hurried introduction of analogue sets without carrying due sustainability of the gadgets .
“The government should be blamed for all woes bedeviling matatu industry because it passed recommendations of these analogue speed limiters”, said Koech.
The government through the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has revoked four brands and suspended eleven other speed limiters in line to streamline the speeds of PSV vehicles.
The PSV operators have threatened to move to court to block the order unless the government compensate those affected,
However the government has defended the order saying that matatu crews have been tampering with analogue sets promoting to introduction of new brands -digital speed governors which are tamper-proof that records data with adjustments by mechanics.
