An accident involving a Githurai Sacco PSV bus and a lorry in Kericho left four dead and over 25 others seriously injured. The Christmas night accident at the Kericho-Kisumu road junction also left a police officer dead as the bus headed for Kisumu.Confirming the incident, Kericho County Commander James Mugera, said the 52-seater bus that plies Thika Road-Nairobi CBD route, lost control after brakes failed, ramming into a lorry."The brakes failed as it went down the slope from town. As it approached Kisumu road, where traffic police conduct checks, a lorry was negotiating the spikes. The bus then hit the lorry before landing in a swampy ditch."The injured were rushed to the Kericho District Hospital. The traffic police officer was manning a police roadblock erected near Kisumu road junction before being knocked to death by the speeding bus. It is believed the driver of the bus was trying to evade the police roadblock erected 2.5Kms from Kericho town, with 31 passengers onboard.Responding to the incident, Matatu Owners Association Chairman Simeon Kimutai blamed the driver of the bus saying he was unfamiliar with the road. “The bus ordinary operates a city route and the driver wasn’t familiar with the Kericho-Kisumu highway," he said."This is the reason PSVs should not be allowed to take routes other than those they were licensed to ply,” Mbugua added.
