Owners of Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) in Mombasa have asked the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to place cameras in strategic points on highways in a bid to curb reckless driving.Matatu Owners Association Coast regional coordinator Salim Mubarak said careless drivers must be arrested and stern action taken against them whenever they cause accidents."Drivers who are not observing traffic rules should be barred from using our roads as this will help to reduce the number of accidents witnessed on our roads. Those arrested should be sent to jail to serve as an example to the others,” said Mubarak.Mubarak urged traffic police officers not to accept bribes from rogue drivers and instead ensure they face the full force of the law.Mubarak also said unroadworthy vehicles should also not be allowed to operate since they pose a threat to other road users."President Uhuru Kenyatta should order the relevant authorities to deal with rogue drivers and revoke their licenses to ensure safety on our roads," he added. He called on passengers to report drivers who fail to follow traffic rules for immediate legal action to be taken against them."Members of the public should not tolerate rogue drivers by remaining silent. Let them come out and report misbehaving drivers to enable police take action against them,” said Mubarak. This comes even as the government puts up measures to curb road accidents. On Tuesday, acting Interior CS Fred Matiang'i said the government will deregister all driving schools and register them afresh in a bid to curb the increasing cases of road accidents."We need to know who is qualified. We are giving licences to murderous [people]. How is it that we don't review their health every year?” asked Matiang’i.“NTSA will provide criteria and frameworks to guide the driving schools. They shall have to be registered again,” he added. Is there a newsworthy accident, incident or event happening in Mombasa County that you want Hivisasa to cover?
