Matatu owners in Nakuru have welcomed the government’s move to launch a crackdown on Proboxes and other small vehicles engaging in illegal public transport business. Nakuru Central Matatu Sacco chairman Stephen Muli, who represents over 4,000 matatu owners, said Proboxes and other small vehicles which are not public service compliant have affected business for matatus due to unhealthy competitions. “We have all along been complaining since these illegal entrants are not authorised public service vehicles like matatus,” said Muli, adding that they will help the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) get rid of such vehicles from the roads. Muli further said that vehicles operating as matatus illegally have created insanity in roads besides becoming the number one killers through accidents. He urged all the stakeholders in the industry to combine efforts and assist NTSA to bring sanity on roads. “Proboxes pick, drop and operate from anywhere in total disregard of other road users besides flouting public service rules,” noted Muli. Nakuru County executive member for transport Mina Kairu also applauded the move, saying it was timely to create order in the matatu sector. NTSA on Tuesday announced a countrywide crackdown on Proboxes and other small vehicles as a means of enhancing sanity and promoting safety on roads.
