Matatu owners in Kisii and surrounding towns have been warned of the existence of fake Saccos in the sector.

According to Kisii Matatu Owners Association chairperson Albert Obiri, this has been a concern and they are calling for the government to release a list of certified Saccos that could operate in the county and the country at large.

“This is not something the government doesn’t know, but we really need serious actions to be taken so that we can stop losing money as Matatu Owners to Saccos that purport to be registered by the Ministry of Transport,” said Obiri.

According to Doel Onsando , a member of the association, he had been conned by a Saccos that had an office in Kisii town only to realise later that the Sacco was not registered when his car was involved in an accident.

“I really warn other matatu owners that the town is full of fake Sacco brokers and I don’t want them to fall into the trap that I found myself in when my car got in an accident. They look genuine but in the real sense they are fake,” said Onsando.
