A matatu Sacco in Nakuru has launched a Social Corporate Responsibility (SCR) programme, which looks to sponsor a free monthly medical camp in all towns it covers within Nakuru County.
The Bahama matatu Sacco management said that they have decided to give back to the community, which has kept them in business and made them reach where they are.
Speaking Friday morning during the launch of the initiative at the Bahati health center, Bahama sacco chairman Peter Nderitu said that they chose to give back to the community through heath services, because most people in the towns they cover have limited access to healthcare.
“Many people have the perception that CSR programmes are the preserve of big companies like safaricom and equity, but we want to show them that even the matatu industry has the potential of giving back to the society,” said Nderitu.
“For a long time, the matatu industry has been associated with all the negative things but now it is time to redeem the image of our industry through such initiatives, which will make the society feel that we are part of them,” added Nderitu.
“We will be partner with health organisation in organizing monthly health camps, which will be free at all the towns we cover and this will include, Bahati, Subukia, Maili sita, Nyahururu and all the small towns’ along the Nakuru-Nyahururu road,” he added.
Bahama sacco is among the biggest matatu saccos in Nakuru town, which dominates the public transport sector along Nakuru-Nyahururu highway.
