[Photo/the-star]Matayos MP Geoffrey Odanga and the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) Busia branch clashed on Saturday over the MP's claims that the performance of schools in his constituency in the recently released KCPE results was deplorable.Speaking during the burial of Busia County employee and his niece Florence Kwena Mubweka in Bukhayo West Ward, the MP said schools had slipped in performance, a feat that calls for urgent attention."Out of 51 schools in my constituency, 29 registered negative deviation with Bugeng'i registering the worst negative deviation of 26.7. The sub-county also registered a drop of 6.0. This is a great concern and it calls for attention to see where we went wrong. Education officers in the sub-county including County Director, sub-county Directors and Assessment Standards Officers should wake up and visit schools regularly and give reports," he said."All stakeholders should get involved in finding a lasting solution to this poor show. We can't bury our heads in the sand, adding that time for action is now," he added. In a quick rejoinder, County Women representative Lydia Nabwire told the MP to appreciate the efforts the teachers put in recording better results in this year's KCPE, adding that they experience what the teachers go through."You also have to underscore the fact that there are other things affecting the performance of any given school. So please we want to kindly request that you appreciate whatever the teachers did for this year. I know 2018 they will register better results," she said.Knut representative Matayos Constituency Joseph Wesonga said the teachers tried despite most of them taking their time to campaign for the MP in the August 8 general elections.Despite 29 schools registering negative deviation, Ebenezer Academy in Matayos constituency produced two top students in KCPE in Priest Anthony Ndungu and Stanley Barasa who scored with 434 marks each.
