Several people sustained injuries in violence that erupted in Mathare slums sparked by a raid on an illicit brew den.

A police operation that was aimed at smoking out traffickers of illicit brews turned violent.

Residents attacked the police officers who were carrying out the operation and later started fighting each other.

One officer sustained serious injuries on the face after being pelted with stones while another officer had his communication gadget grabbed from him.

Vehicles were destroyed in the violence that lasted for hours.

There were fears that the violence was politically motivated.

''I thought it was about NASA and Jubilee.'' Joram Kamau, a resident of Mathare, said.

Reinforcements were called and the situation was restored to normalcy.

Witnesses say that the situation became chaotic after some individuals were arrested.
