Mathare United put up a spirited fight to see off relegated Muhoroni Youth 2-1 in a match played at the Ruaraka Stadium on Saturday.
The Slum Boys who were coming into the match on the backdrop of relegation threat commanded proceedings from the onset and were duly gifted on the 36th minute when Edwin Seda made a beautiful turn before firing a low shot past Muhoroni's goalie Said Juma into the far right.
The lead was however short lived as Maxwell Onyango took advantage of a melee around Mathare's goalmouth to restore parity on the 40th minute as the match proceeded for halftime.
On resumption, the 2008 champions continued to pile more pressure on the Sugar millers and extended their lead in the 56th minute after Cliff Nyakweya fired home following a delicious cross from John Mwangi.
Mathare held on tightly to the two-goal lead to pocket the vital three points that saw them jump to 14th on the log with 38 points.
However, the relegation ghost still looms large for the Francis Kimanzi charges and they must win their last match against Posta Rangers and pray that Thika United slips to avoid any playoff.
