Education CS Fred Matiang'i on Wednesday announced significant changes to the 2016 academic calendar, which will see the third term cut short to nine weeks while term two will be extended by a week.
The changes are meant to pave way for effective administration of the Kenya secondary and primary national examinations which registered immense cheating cases last year.
Matiang'i also cancelled visiting days during third term in a bid to minimise cheating cases in the upcoming national examinations which will be undertaken between October and November this year.
Another change imposed on the national exams is that the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exams will take place earlier as compared to the KCSE exams.
The primary school final exams will run from November 1-3 while KCSE will start on Nov 7 through to Nov 30.
According to the CS, school heads will be in charge of the exams, something which previously was done by outside supervisors.
"We have made drastic changes in the academic calendar which will see us minimize incidences of cheating of the exams," said Matiang'i.
He was speaking in the Jogoo House and many will be keen to see how the changes will reduce cheating in the forthcoming national examinations.
