Education Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i has apologised over rampant examination irregularities witnessed in 2015 Kenya Certificate for Secondary School Exams (KCSE).

Over 5,000 students will have their examination results withheld or cancelled after preliminary investigations showed that they may have engaged in examination malpractices.

Speaking during the official release of the exams on Thursday at Mutiani House, Matiangi called upon all stakeholders to work with the ministry of education to combat the menace.

“I want to apologise on behalf of the government over examination malpractices. It’s really absurd that someone goes to school up to that level and at the end of the day he or she doesn’t receive the results. This is a malpractice that all stakeholders, including teachers and parents have to work with us so that we can combat it,” said Matiang'i.

He said that the ministry had formed a special technical committee that will investigate the menace and come with concrete recommendations which will be used as guidelines in future to curb malpractices.

“Cheating in exams is the worst form of intellectual dishonesty. As government, we have formed a special committee that will investigate cases of irregularities and use its recommendations. The ministry of education will also work with the interior ministry to punish those who helped students engage in malpractices,” he added.

Only Isiolo County that didn’t record any incident of examination malpractices with Nairobi, Meru and Makueni recording highest cases according to the CS.
