Maseno University students have strongly opposed the plan by education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i to increase university fees.
According to the students, the current fees being paid is high and increasing it will add misery to a majority of the students.
They said that it is wrong for Matiang’i to even consider implementing such a move. Speaking to this writer on Tuesday, they said the education CS does not have intrests of the students at heart.
“Some of us come from poor backgrounds, and raising the current fees might force some of us to quit school and i wonder who in their right mind will want that to happen to a Kenyan student,” said Anita Oketch.
The students went further to urge vice chancellors in all public universities to oppose the move in the strongest manner possible and call for increased funding from the government.
“Our Vice Chancellors should not give a blind eye to this issue because they know how some students struggle to pay fees,” said Eunice Akinyi a third year student at the institution.
The student said that increasing the fees should also be accompanied with increased funding from the Higher Education Loans board.
This came after Matiang’i met with all Vice Chancellors from public universities to discuss how the increase in varsity fees will be done.
