Matiang’I, while appearing before the Senate committee on Education on Tuesday said that cases of drug abuse are still rampant in some schools.

The CS said that the report conducted into causes of unrest in schools point partly to drug and substance abuse.

To address the matter, the CS told the Senate committee that his ministry has partner with other government agencies including National Authority for Campaign against Drug Abuse (NACADA) to curb drug abuse in schools.

“We will immediately organize for campaigns to sensitize students against drug abuse and take correction measures in schools where the abuse is rampant,” he told the Senate Committee.

The CS at the same time defended his ministry against claims of laxity in taming the unrest.

He said that his ministry is working tirelessly with school management board and head teachers to come up with proper policies that will curb the unrest.

Matiang’i also denied claims that the unrest being experienced in some schools was as a result for the extension of Third term.

The CS said that the ministry consulted widely with stakeholders before making the adjustments to school calendar, and that head teachers and board or management have been directed to act tough on indiscipline students.

He said that a circular has been sent out to all schools barring indiscipline students to transfer to other schools.

There has been a wave of dormitories fire in some schools across the country with Kisii County being the most affected.
