The University Academic Staff Union(UASU) has warned Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i over what they have termed as "micromanaging universities by decrees and road-side proclamations."

Speaking to the media on Thursday, UASU secretary general Constantine Wesonga fired back at Matiang'i on employment contracts for university staff, observing that the cabinet secretary's comments are illegal and a breach of employment laws.

The lecturers accused the outspoken CS of abuse of power, insisting that universities are autonomous under the Universities Act.

Wesonga further decried conditions of service suggested by Matiang'i, asserting that it is a ploy by the state to deny retired lecturers their pension.

“The CS would also tear to shreds all social minima won by lecturers over the years,” Wesonga said.

“Why has nobody ever suggested contractual and non-pensionable employment for other public sector employees?” he posed.

The lecturers downed their tools earlier this month, demanding better pay from the government.
